Why Bulletproof Your Morning Coffee?
While I love coffee, it doesn't always love me back.
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian health system, offers a nuanced perspective on coffee. It acknowledges coffee's energizing benefits while warning about potential downsides—digestive issues, dehydration, and overstimulation—especially when consumed excessively. The key is balancing coffee intake based on your individual constitution and health needs.
As someone with a Vata constitution, I've learned to approach caffeine cautiously. I've noticed it can really amp up my already active energy, sometimes pushing me into anxiety or restlessness. It tends to make me feel even drier than usual, and my sensitive digestion doesn't always cope well with it. I've found that caffeine can throw off my sleep patterns too, which is crucial for keeping my Vata in check.
Dave Asprey's concept of Bulletproof coffee caught my attention with its potential health benefits. This keto-friendly drink, made by adding healthy fats to coffee, aims to promote ketosis—a state where the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Proponents claim it can aid weight loss, boost energy, reduce appetite, and improve mental clarity.
Here’s the best part- it takes about 3 minutes to make and includes 3 ingredients:
Just 3 Ingredients
👉1 cup coffee with 2 ½ tablespoons of freshly ground low-acid coffee
👉1-2 tablespoons of MCT oil.
👉2 tablespoons grass-fed butter or ghee
Coffee, medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil, and butter.
It’s not Bulletproof coffee if any of the three ingredients is missing!
The reason is, that each of these ingredient brings its own set of benefits that add to the overall value of this hot, yummy, energizing drink.
Using the Bulletproof "brand" is NOT at all necessary! I do however, use the "brain octane oil" from Bulletproof, but some people prefer to use organic coconut oil. I also like to use high quality Irish unsalted butter, or, my favorite GHEE.
Choose coffee that is low acidity, blend and GO!
Bulletproof coffee is designed to be a breakfast replacement. Starting your day with this keto coffee instead of breakfast, is beneficial in many ways. Here are the main Bulletproof coffee benefits worth mentioning.
Lasting Energy- MCT oil is short for medium-chain triglycerides oil. It's a naturally occurring fatty acid. Unlike other oils, MCT oil bypasses processing by the liver. It then goes straight into the bloodstream to be converted into ketones for fuel. This leads to quicker, sustainable energy that lasts. By having it in the morning, you'll ensure you have the lasting energy for the day. Combination of grass-fed butter and caffeine brings another benefit. Saturated fat in butter slows down your body's caffeine absorption. This prevents any caffeine related crash, mood spike, or jitter.
Mental Clarity- Combination of caffeine and fats are well formulated for reaching ketosis. By reaching ketosis, drinkers often report better mental clarity, alertness, and focus.
Feeling Satisfied- One benefit many are after is satisfaction. You can credit MCT oil for this attribute. Intake of fatty acids suppresses a hunger hormone called ghrelin. It not only suppresses hunger but also brings fullness and satisfaction.
Here’s the Bulletproof Coffee Recipe:
Ingredients:
1. 1 cup coffee with 2 ½ tablespoons of freshly ground low-acid coffee
2. 1-2 tablespoons of MCT oil. The original Bulletproof coffee calls for Brain Octane Oil. But the closest accessible MCT oil is coconut oil. Choose organic.
3. 2 tablespoons grass-fed butter. You can also use grass-fed ghee as an alternative. Whichever one you pick, to avoid making your coffee salty, use unsalted variety.
Directions:
1. Brew your coffee. Get 2 ½ tablespoons of ground coffee beans. Make 1 cup coffee by using filtered, purified water. French press is the preferred way as it preserves natural coffee oil, but it’s not an absolute must.
2. Add MCT Oil. Use organic coconut oil if you don’t have Brain Octane oil. Add it to the coffee 1 tablespoon at a time.
3. Add butter or ghee. Add 1-2 tablespoons of butter or grass-fed ghee to the coffee.
4. Blend. Add all to the blender and blend until it’s foamy. It may take anywhere from 15-30 seconds.
Drink it while it’s hot before butter starts to form.
ENJOY!
